Everyone is afflicted with this disaster, the poor and the rich, the working people and the unemployed. If an earthquake strikes, people under the rubble begging for help, would you offer them your help for money? I think the answer is clear - no.
If medical care is a business for profit, there is no guarantee that the clients will not pay for some unnecessary procedures and medicine created only to bring more profit for the business. People who lived in USSR know that totally free health care is possible. People in Capitalist countries, especially in America, don’t understand where the soviet government got money for the free health care to pay the doctors' wages.
In Socialism, the state (government) works and makes money. In Capitalism the state has no money so it collects taxes. In Socialism, the state runs a state corporation that makes profit which goes to the business owner as in Capitalism. But, in Socialism, the business owner is the people. Part of the profit goes to the worker in the form of free health care, free education, free housing. And the other part is in the form of other benefits, such as free health resorts, and many other things - the list is big. Plus, the monthly and yearly bonuses for every worker.
But, free health care is possible even from taxes. It is possible because the number of medical workers in a city is very small compared with its population.
Suppose you live in a city with 600,000 inhabitants. There are 20 hospitals in the city and 2,500 medical staff. Suppose, that only half of the 600,000 inhabitants work, that is 300,000. Then, if each of them paid $100 tax per month, then all the doctors would earn $12,000 per month. This is without the state's support. With the state's support in Socialism, the docs could earn even more.
In Capitalism, this is impossible, because everyone wants to become a millionaire: the insurance company, the owners of the hospitals, the manufacturers of medical equipment, the medical schools that train doctors, the doctors themselves who pay a lot of money for the training, the companies that have to pay big taxes to the state which also wants to become rich - all this burden falls on the consumer shoulders. As a result, the prices of health care in Capitalism soar through the roof.
The fact that health care is paid, does not make the quality of health care better, as some people mistakenly think and how oligarch-run media try to make us think. It only depends on the personal abilities of the doctor. A poet, or writer, would not write a poem or a book better if they were paid more money. Because they will write as it is given to them by nature. I cannot write a poem even for $1,000,000. The ability to cure people, or do something better than others, depends on the nature of a particular person. If you go to a "business doctor|, they may show themselves as professionals, be super polite, but they have no more knowledge in their heads than a doctor in the free health care system. This is why, in the USA, with most expensive health care in the world, 251,000 people die every year due to the doctors' mistakes.
Not free medical education also affects the quality of medicine, and makes it worse. One of my friends decided to remove his 5 teeth in Mexico. The first doctor was a woman who started with, as she put it the “2 easy teeth”. The service was relatively inexpensive. She suffered 1 hour trying to extract one tooth and in a few days she removed the second tooth in one hour. This is why, the person decided to take care of “ 3 difficult teeth” with another dentist whose service cost more money. The doctor removed 3 “difficult teeth” in 2 seconds each. The whole procedure took only 5 minutes. As we can see, there is a huge difference between those two dentists. The second dentist was trained in a very expensive school, and paid a lot of money for the training. Now, his job costs more, and only rich clients go to him.
It turns out that if you study at the expensive school, you get good knowledge and treat the rich, and if you study in the inexpensive school you get bad knowledge and treat the poor. It turns out that the rich gets the best health care, and the poor gets the worse.
It must not be so. Medical, as any education, should be the same for all, independently of the size of the wallet. Only in this case the quality of health care will always be the same and of high quality for everyone.
Most diseases can be avoided with proper nutrition, but in a capitalist society this is difficult, because everything is done for profit. Therefore, all food is crammed with preservatives so that it last longer and brings more profit. It is crammed with various flavors to make it tastier than the food of the competitors. As a result, food leads to disease. The same thing with medicine. They all have side effects, but who cares if selling drugs brings huge profit, so they are prescribed to people at every opportunity. And people think that if there are a lot of drugs, then we have a superb health care.
