Many people, especially Americans, do not know what Socialism is.
Politically speaking, Socialism was a response of the working class to the exploitation and unfair treatment by the corrupt Capitalist power elite, the government, and the "planters" (business owners, and shareholders) before 1917. We, the modern day wage workers have not seen the horrors of the unfair treatment which the wage workers had been experiencing for centuries in Europe. So it is hard for us to understand why people wanted Socialism.
Economically speaking, and on a small scale, Socialism is a co-operative where the workers themselves own and run their own business. On a state level, it is a state co-operative, where all wage workers in the country own all means of production in the country (all businesses in the country).
But, Socialism is not just a new economic system. It is also a new political system, a new way of life, that can be better defined by its main goals and characteristics:
1. The separation of oligarchs from power. This world is run by oligarchs. They run not only businesses, but also states. They own lands, Earth's natural resources. They even run foreign states (imperialism) - all in the name of profit. This oligarchism has been going on our planet for thousands of years, starting with Slavery of the Roman Empire, Feudalism, and ending up with today's Capitalism. The results of their reign are constant wars, colonization of entire continents, extermination of indigenous peoples, colonial and opium wars, sanctions, embargo imposed on sovereign countries, wars for oil, splitting whole countries into parts, WWI and WWII, economic crisises based on artificially created problems in pursuit of profit, poverty, unemployment, unaffordable health care, arms race and nuclear weapons, creation of biological weapons, etc. The list is very long.
While the advantage of Capitalism, Slavery and Feudalism is the same for all three, has always been very attractive to all people, and well known to everyone: you can become infinitely rich if you can find a way how to make other people either work for you, or fight for you. The areas in which you can profiteer can vary from owning your own business to wars, colonization, currency fraud or speculation, redistribution of markets, prostitution, etc.
2. In contrast, Socialism is when the power, Earth's resources belong to all people. This means that the profit from the sales of natural resources to other countries is shared with all people. If you want to build a house you do not have to buy land, because it is free, which greatly reduces the cost of housing. The prices for all products are reduced because the raw materials are free.
3. In Socialism social production is allowed and is the main one, while private production (private business) is a supplemental one. Unlike in Capitalism, where social production is a crime. 4. In Socialism the means of production belong to all people, so all people get profit from it. The result is free health care, including dentist, free housing, free education, higher salaries and many other benefits.
5. Socialism is a completely new economic and political system which was created by the people for the people. Its main goal is to change the regime that has been ruling our planet for thousands of years.
6. One of the first countries that implemented Socialism was USSR which is always blamed by the west oligarchs for the soviet revolution, civil war and the consequences of the civil war - the repressions, which mainly were out of revenge for the killed relatives on both sides in the civil war (the civil war lasted 5 years, 250,000 were killed). All that was happening with the support of the west oligarchs, who supported Czar both monetarily and militarily. This is why it is important to know that it was impossible to quickly and peacefully eliminate the oligarchs who had ruled Russian Empire for 1,000 years. Both, the Russian and the West oligarchs did not allow that. As the west oligarchs did not allow the removal of the Monarchs and Feudalism in Europe, and Slavery in the US, which also had lead to the revolutions and civil wars there. The oligarchs-run media do not tell you that there was Serfdom in Russian Empire until 1861, there were serfs, who basically were slaves, who could be killed with no trial. They do not tell you that men served in the Russian army for life. And only before the first revolution in 1905 they diminished it to 25 years. They do not tell you that there was abysmal inequality where most people in the country lived in poverty, and only a few lived like kings, that there was no minimum wage, no age restrictions for working on the factories for Capitalists, no working unions, workers were not allowed to assemble in groups of more than 3 people, no paid vacations, people worked on weekends, and other things that we can't see now. Thanks to the Russian revolution and civil war, that caused a great fear in the West oligarchs, we enjoy our labor rights now. The west oligarchs, with the victory of the Bolsheviks in Russia, had to give the labor rights to us.
The oligarch's hatred towards Socialism is evident now - all socialist countries, and those who want to trade with them, are subjected to severe sanctions, even with the threats of military intervention. This, shows the real face of the oligarchs - they freely send troops to kill innocent people in other countries for profit. Their latest crimes are the wars in Iraq, Libya, Syria, the illegal sanctions against the people of Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, China, Russia, Syria, Iran, and this is even happening at the times of Covid-19, and there is no end in sight.
Disadvantages of Socialism Its main disadvantage is that, like Capitalism, it is based on profit. Therefore, it is easily affected by economic sanctions, and arms race (oligarchs know it and always impose sanctions or arm race to weaken Socialist economies), and in general the system itself is basically the same as Capitalism - because it is based on profit. So, wherever there is profit, there is always loss. Therefore, both Socialism and Capitalism are losses-based economies, this is why there is always chronic lack money both for the people and the government.
